This seems to have created a false expectation on the part of audiences and critics. This was epitomised by Vaas, who featured in nearly all advertising. Adverts for the game pre-release heavily referenced the theme of insanity. The mixed response to the game seems to have been partly caused by the game’s marketing. One reason for the criticism was the death of the compelling antagonist Vaas halfway before the end, being replaced by the less interesting Hoyt.
Many decried the game as racist and criticised the game’s narrative.
The critical reaction, however, was less than stellar. 2012’s Far Cry 3 was a massive commercial success, selling millions of copies since its release.
